What Are Parabens And Why Are They Bad?

Here at Natural World, we pride ourselves on using the finest natural and organic ingredients and providing free-from formulas. One key ingredient we don’t use in our formulas are parabens. Widely used as preservatives, parabens stop fungus, bacteria and other microbes from growing in your cosmetics. Their ingredient names are long but generally end in -paraben such as methylparaben and ethylparaben.

So why are they so bad for you? Well, over the past few years scientists have been investigating the links between parabens and breast cancer. Tests have been monitoring how parabens have the ability to mimic estrogen, which is linked to breast cancer and its progression, although there are no firm results that parabens directly cause breast cancer. Other studies have found after applying paraben-containing lotions that they are absorbed into the bloodstream. Studies have shown it’s a cause for concern but there has been no solid evidence to re-evaluate the current safety laws on cosmetics and beauty products containing parabens.

Limiting your exposure to parabens by checking the ingredients lists of your products for the preservatives is a good start, as well as looking out for the ‘paraben free’ label too. All of our shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, hair masks and body oils are free from parabens and will always be free from them for now on.
